Art Competition Runner Up - Ogungbe

Art Competition - Voices of Resistance!

We think that female genital mutilation (FGM) is everybody’s business and that young people’s voices and views are essential to ending FGM. We believe that resistance, change, perseverance and survival are essential elements in the FGM campaign. What do you think?

We are pleased to showcase the brilliant poem from our runner up

Ogungbe ‘Bunmi Victoria

who is a 24 year old activist living in Nigeria. Have a read of her amazing poem below.

NEVER AGAIN . . .

Its not in me to be cold
I know when the passion should rise
though I do not have to be told
I’m meant to be me, a girl, cold as ice

Go down the aisle,
hold tight the smile
not a single slip
of the turmoil inside
“be strong my girl
a proud woman you soon will be”
no more, mother, never again

Reach deep down
its in there somewhere
or so I thought at first
now I know its lost
knife bared, blades sharp
the dawn of the girls feast
the day that part of me was taken

Now I know its lost forever
no more, never again

Its here now, I feel it
voices raised, arms poised
no more of this feminine sorrow
No more, no more FGM . . . never again

We are really grateful for all the hard work from all the young people who submitted work into our competitions.
